Ursula le Guin

(Annals of the Western Shore)

Set in an ancient world, Le Guin tells the mesmerizing story of a young boy, Gavir, who was stolen as a baby and sold into slavery. Although blessed with special powers enabling him to see into the future and the past, his gift fails to warn him of the tragedy to befall him. More psychological coming of age story than magical fantasy, this is wonderfully written and leaves lots to think about.
